Maslouhi is an organization that works with women artisans in Tameslouht, Morocco. Maslouhi artisans produce a variety of traditional Moroccan handicrafts, including blankets, scarves, baskets, jewelry, and other types of decor and accessories. Pictured are two examples of their work: a Moroccan wedding blanket with sequins and a wool pom-pom blanket. Although both have become internationally-recognizable home decor items in the past few years, each piece claims its design roots in both Arabic and Amazigh (Berber) stylistic traditions dating many centuries back in Morocco.
All artisans who work with Maslouhi are trained within the Moroccan Ministry of Handicrafts and Artisana. They set their own prices and work schedules, and most choose to work out of their homes. Many of the women are the primary breadwinners in their houses; since Maslouhi began in 2013, many of these artisans have seen their income stabilize rather than depending on the tourist markets of Marrakech. Many studies show that this sort of sustainable economic empowerment of women is what has the potential to uplift an entire community. We hope to see this happen in Tameslouht!
